Applying for Jobs

I worked at the spa for a year.

During that time, I applied for approximately 12 jobs. I was interviewed for 3. I got 2 of them, one of which was a temporary position that only lasted through the holidays, and one of them is the job I have currently. I was being very picky, as I think that any job should have a commitment for a certain timeframe (in my case, 6-month minimum) as just a courtesy to the business who chose to hire you. Of course, I have just received this job, but there are several other jobs I am also qualified for that I would like to apply to.

My mental loyalty coerces me to not even bother applying…but then again, what does it hurt? I suppose there would be the conflict of quitting a job you’ve been at for less than 6 months; the fear of upsetting everyone around you…I hate it when I upset people. It’s one of my biggest fears.

What would you do, if you just got a job, then saw several others you’d like to apply for? What are your opinions regarding job loyalty?

That was my mentality as well a few summers ago when I left my last office job. I got hired at Paper Source but still interviewing at print shops/design firms. But I looooove Paper Source so much and my manger there that I felt guilty even applying at other places. I totally understand the loyalty conflict.

I knew I had to keep applying and looking for a job that would pay more. There is a saying “80/20 – put 80% into your current job and 20% preparing for a better job.” My dad is always reminding us of that ><!

I asked my mom for her thoughts; she basically echoed my sentiments- a minimum of 6 months (I like a year) unless contacted by a recruiter. She mentioned that it would reflect poorly if you’ve just received a job and start actively looking for a new one immediately as it shows a lack of loyalty…which is how I’ve always felt! Justified, lol!

@ginger, Agreed – even after getting hired at my current office, I stayed at Paper Source an additional 4 months. I was shy of 3 months before my year anniversary with the store ;o;!
